2018 2oz Mother & Baby .999 Silver BU Piedfort Coin
Description
2oz Silver Bullion Piedfort
The Perth Mint’s first 2oz silver bullion piedfort coin features a mother and baby koala.
This new 2oz silver bullion coin is issued as a piedfort (pronounced pee-ay-fore). This unusual bullion release has the same diameter as a 1oz silver coin but is double the thickness. Piedforts take their name from the French words for heavy weight and were first struck in France during the 12th century.
Featuring an Australian favourite, the koala, who’s evolution in Australia dates back some 30 to 40 million years, this coin’s reverse depicts a mother koala perched on a branch carrying her baby on her back. The design also includes eucalyptus leaves, radial lines and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2018 year-date, the weight and purity, and the monetary denomination are shown on the coin’s obverse.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a maximum mintage of 75,000 pieces.
