HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE
“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.” – William Shakespeare’s Hamlet Rosemary is believed by many to have memory enhancing properties. For this reason, it has been used in art and poetry for centuries as a symbol of remembrance. Australians continue this tradition by wearing sprigs of rosemary on Remembrance Day and Anzac Day as a way to commemorate those who have died in active service and other military operations.
Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year and marks the anniversary of the Armistice that brought an end to the First World War in 1918. As the centenary of this Armistice draws near the Royal Australian Mint continues the tradition of commemorating this day of national reflection with a beautiful and evocative coloured $2 coin.
