More than a year after her accession in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in Westminster Abbey.The Royal Australian Mint’s commemorative 50c coin honours the 60th anniversary of that momentous event, which began one of the longest reigns in British history.
The coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953 captured the attention of the world in an unprecedented manner. In addition to the 8 251 guests in attendance, an international audience of over twenty million watched the coronation ceremony on television. For many it was the first television program they had ever seen. Essential elements of the modern coronation service can be traced back to the crowning of King Edgar at Bath in the tenth century, and has remained largely unchanged for 900 years. The coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a monarch who is cherished around the world, marked the commencement of a reign which has now spanned six decades.
