2008 International Year of Planet Earth Six Coin Proof Set
The General Assembly of the Unite Nations has declared 2008 the ‘International Year of Planet Earth’. Among the key areas of study for the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) are aspects of climate change and water resources, As our country struggles with the aftermath of drought, these subjects are especially relevant to the Australian experience.
The Year set designs were developed in partnership with Geoscience Australia – a peak body for IPYE activities in Australia. In the 2008 6 coin Proof set, the $1 coin depicts the powerful impact of climate change on all forms of life, the change we effect on the earth, modelling how mineral deposits formed and how the landscape has evolved over millions of years, showing the sediment layers down through to the ground water hidden beneath.
This set is housed in a rigid plastic case which is enclosed in a leatherette folder bearing the Royal Australian Mint/Australian Government badge on the front.
