Symbolising the identity and unity of Torres Strait Islander people, the Torres Strait Islander Flag was designed by Bernard Namok. A richly symbolic motif, the flag unites green panels representing the land with a blue panel representing the Torres Strait. Upon the blue panel is a white 5-pointed star representing the five major island groups, surrounded by a depiction of a dhari – a traditional Torres Strait Islander headdress. The black stripes separating the blue and green panels symbolise the people of the Torres Strait Islands.
Eye-catching and affordable, this official Australian legal tender issue marks 30 years since Governor-General Bill Hayden officially proclaimed the Torres Strait Islander Flag as an official Australian Flag in July 1995.
