2006 $5 State Government Series - NSW - 150th Anniversary of State Government
150 years ago in 1856 the States of Victoria, NSW and Tasmania were granted self-government and their own State Governments. An anniversary of this proportion deserves a significant tribute and we are very pleased to announce three brilliant silver proof coins.
Did you know that the New South Wales parliament is 45 years older than the Australian parliament? It met for the first time in Sydney in May 1856 and marked a turning point in our history, when power was transferred from the Crown representative to the people.
These coins are the first in a series of releases to celebrate self-government and statehood for all states and territories as their anniversaries were acknowledged in the following years.
The passing of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act empowered the Government to make laws with respect to currency, coinage and legal tender.
