2002 $5 Silver Proof Coin - Queen Mother

This coin was issued to commemorate the death of the Queen Mother in 2002. As the Duchess of York, she travelled to Australia with her husband the Duke (later King George VI) in 1927 for the opening of the first Parliament House in Canberra.

The reverse design of the coin is based on a photograph taken at the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville Race Course in South Australia in May, 1927. Her portrait is surrounded by wattle blossoms, Australia's national floral emblem, entwined with 'Elizabeth of Glamis' rose blossoms.
